Family Learning Program Assistant

Department: Center Education & Public Program
Location: Chicago, IL

Our Mission: Since the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, our organization has aimed to connect people to the natural environment and human history.

The individual(s) in this position will support the Family Learning Team by assisting in the preparation of and facilitating related programs and events, including, but not limited to, Dozin’ with the Dinos overnights, Field Family Nights, Field Explorer Camps, Adult Programs, and other onsite and offsite events for families, teens, and communities; and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position will work a maximum of 28 hours per week
  • Work at least 7 Dozin’ with the Dinos overnight events per season as assigned
  • Work at least 3 Field Family Nights per year as assigned
  • Provide visitors with a consistent and stellar guest experience, including but not limited to ticketing/check-in, program facilitation, and fielding general museum inquiries
  • Assist staff in program operations including but not limited to setting up and tearing down on days of events, providing a safe and welcoming space for visitors, and ensuring that events run as planned
  • Attend regular training sessions to learn “evergreen” programs for events, as well as review best practices in program facilitation for young learners and their families
  • Assist with coordination of program logistics and implementation of onsite and offsite outreach events, including family programs, adult programs, and camps
  • Candidates will work closely with Learning Center program administrators to assist with the coordination and successful implementation of programs, including but not limited to preparing materials, setting up learning spaces, and facilitating programming
  • Assist Family Learning team in designing, prototyping, and implementing engaging activities for Family Learning programs and events
  • This position will frequently stay overnight at the museum and may include off site travel for some programs
  • Assist with program curriculum development as needed
  • Assist with other programming designed for the family audience, which may include community engagement programs offsite
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience, in education or social sciences preferred
  • The ideal candidate has at least 1-3 years of experience interacting with the public in formal and informal settings and a desire to work with multiple age groups, from families with young children to adults
  • The ideal candidate must be well-organized, self-motivated, and flexible in an ever changing environment
  • Outstanding communication and customer service skills are required. Professional demeanor and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders required
  • Must demonstrate a strong interest in education and/or the sciences
  • Bilingual candidates are a plus
